Nick Jonas is ready to move on the next phase of his music career following the disbandment of the Jonas Brothers, and on Thursday (July 24), the youngest JoBro dropped an intriguing preview of his forthcoming solo full-length. Click here to listen to new single “Chains,” which premiered on Complex.

"Chains" is distinctly different from the Jonas Brothers’ music, as well as Nick’s music with the Administration — silky vocals and a decisive R&B aesthetic made one Billboard staffer compare the track to a Miguel song when Jonas stopped by the Billboard office to play new music earlier this week. "Tryna break the chains, but the chains only break me," Jonas declares, desperately trying to position himself as an adult artist, and soundly succeeding.

Produced by Jason Evigan, “Chains” is the first single from Jonas’ forthcoming album on Island Records. It’s also the first music Jonas has released since the Jonas Brothers scrapped a comeback tour and parted ways last October.

The as-yet-untitled album will not feature the Administration, his backing band with whom he released an album, “Who I Am,” in 2010. “Who I Am” has sold 179,000 copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Nick Jonas Releases New Single ”Chains,” Talks About Being ”Trapped In a Love That is Kind of Doomed

Nick Jonas is opening up about love—at least he does in “Chains,” the first single from his upcoming solo album.

"Gave you my heart, but you took my soul," Jonas sings. “You got me in chains, you got me in chains for your love.”

While he doesn’t name names, Jonas says he certainly can relate to the song, written by Jason EviganAmar Malik and Danny Parker.

"I found my way to connect to the song," Jonas, 21, exclusively tells me. "I found it was really true and real. For me, it embodies that feeling of being trapped in a love that is kind of doomed."

He also sings, “Baby, tell me why you do me wrong?”

Yikes.

But don’t feel too bad for Jonas. While he says “it can be” tough to sing about difficult relationships, it actually helps him heal.

"Part of my process of writing and making music is that it helps me not feel that way anymore," Jonas said. "You get it out of your system. Some people write in their journals, some people talk to somebody. For me it’s making music. I think it’s a helpful way to process things."

Chains by Nick Jonas - Lyrics

With the wine-stained lips, yes, you’re nothing but trouble
Cold to the touch but she’s warm as a devil
I gave her my heart but she wanted my soul
She tasted the break and I can’t give her more (?)

CHORUS:
You got me in chains
You got me in chains for your love
But I wouldn’t change
No I wouldn’t change this love

[Repeat chorus]

Try to break the chains, but the chains only break me

Alone in the night ‘til she knocks on my door
Wasted again, but I can’t say no
Baby, tell me why, why you do, do me wrong [x2]
Gave you my heart, but you took my soul

[Chorus x2]

Try to break the chains but the chains only break me [x2]
Baby, tell me why, why you do, do me wrong [x2]
Gave you my heart, but you took my soul

[Chorus x2]

Try to break the chains but the chains only break me
